Production log 4

Re-Shooting our investigation scene.

Today we re-shot our investigation scene because the lighting in the first scenes we shot looked too bright so we decided we would either re shoot the scenes at a different time of day when its darker or just shoot in a different area. We ended up deciding to shoot in the English staff room as it was easier to control the lighting in the room. The staff room also had a pin board and a large table where the detective could sit and work on his case. We got a number of creative shots such as over the shoulder and high angles looking over the top of George (detective). We only had an hour to shoot as much as we could so we had to be efficient with our time and setting up, so when harry and myself were setting up the pin board and the table, Tommy and George were shooting the scene of George walking down the corridor towards the camera. This worked well as by the time they had shot that scene, we had set up the scene in the staff room so we were ready for them to continue filming straight away. If we had more time i would probably try to film a few more random shots just in case we needed some fillers.

Issues with 2nd Screening

Issues after second screening

There were a couple of issues that we found out after our second screening that we will need to change during our next editing session. The first being the font we used, it was agreed that we could find a better font that suits our genre. The second issue was one of the scenes we used where Harry (The killer) was tapping the table which looked good but it was too quick compared to the soundtrack. The last issue we had was the lighting in the investigation scene. Our peers and teacher agreed that the lighting was too bright so in our re shoot we will need to choose a better time to shoot when its darker or find somewhere where we could control the lighting our self.

Feedback for second screening

Second screening Feedback

In our second screening we received more feedback sheets from our peers on things that worked and things that didn't work in our title sequence. Things we were told we need to improve were the fonts used. As only a few of my peers didn't agree with the font i will have to consider weather to go back into editing and find a different font that suites the genre we have chosen. A lot of my peers really liked the title at the end where the letters flashed in sync with the soundtrack so thats something i will be keeping the same for the final piece.

Like our first screening our peers said that the cinematography was good and they liked the range of shot we had used. They also liked the style of editing with the quick flashes that synced with soundtrack. Also like in the first screening my peers liked the use of the strobe light in Harrys scene.

Something that some of my peers said could be developed was there could be some more distortion to create a warped effect to make the audience feel they are in the mind of the killer.

The studio

Studio

The studio we have chosen to fund and produce our film is Warner Brothers. This is because they have made multiple thriller and crime films that have been successful so we have decided that they would be our best choice. Warner Brothers being a huge studio and being known all around the world means that our film should be well promoted and should be well marketed.

Director

Director of the film.

The director we have chosen for our film is Martin Scorsese. This is because he has successfully directed a lot of thriller/crime films such as ''The Departed'' (2006) which was very successful winning Academy award for best Picture and Academy Award for best Director and many more which made us come to the a decision to pick Martin Scorsese as the director of our film. It is vital that we picked a director that has a good reputation for thriller kind of films as he of most people will know best about what makes an successful thriller/crime movie and what an audience expects from it.

Soundtrack

Soundtrack

For our soundtrack we decided that harry and gorge would create the sound track instead of finding one of of the internet. The reason we chose to do this is so that we could make sure it sounded exactly how we wanted it to be and not risk finding one on the internet that might not sound right or match our genre thriller/crime.

To create the sound track they will both be using Logic Pro on the macs provided in the department. Once the soundtrack is finished being created they will then give it to me so that i can start editing the clips over the top of the soundtrack. I will be making sure that at least the majority of cuts will sync with the beats in the soundtrack.

Release

When would we release our film?

If we had to pick a time of year to release our film we would either do it during the Easter when more people are likely to go and see is which would hopefully give it better recognition. Also we could have a chance of the film being sown at a film festival where it could have a chance of being nominated for an award which is our main goal. If we had to pick any other time to release the film then i would personally say to do it in October as it is the month of Halloween. Although you would expect horror film to be released at this time, our film has a killer in it and violence which i still feel like will work well if released at this time.

Audience Profile

Audience profile

Target Age: 15-25
Target Gender: Male
Occupation: Young adults in part time jobs or students with an interest in thriller psycho killer movies with a crime style to them.
Education: Any
Personality/ Interests: An interest in thriller movies with a bit of gore in and murder cases. People who enjoy the thrill of a movie and are looking for surprises. Males tend to watch these kinds of movies more often then women as most enjoy watching violent kinds of movies and dont mind a bit of gore here and there.

Students who may attend colleges only have to attend a few days of the week meaning they have more spare time to go to the cinema and view the film. Young adults would have finished their education and looking for jobs so during this perios of time they are free alot of the time giving them the option of going to the cinema more often.

Our secondary audience would have to be Adults (roughly 30+). Even though i say secondary i still believe they could be classed as the primary because majority of people do enjoy watching crime films so i wouldn't expect people 30+ to not watch this film.

Budget

Budget

The budget of our feel will be reasonably low as it is a small independent film. The average budget of an independent film is roughly $2 million so i believe it is reasonable if we were to set our budget at around $3 million. This will hopefully pay for our production and distribution company to help create and market the film successfully. Our main goal for this film is to be nominated or even win an award or gain a good critic reception as we want to be recognised by bigger company's that might consider working with us on a future film.

Next shoot

Next Shoot

For our next shoot we have decided to book out one of the conference rooms so that we can film our investigation scene in and hopefully get some good shots. I originally had shot this scene in my house but didn't feel that it looked professional enough so we decided to reshoot in a new location. This is where the idea of booking out a conference room came in so tommy emailed one of the schools staff to ask if we could use it.

Production Log 3

Production Log 3

In today's lesson we booked out a conference room because we wanted to re film our investigation scene that i had originally done at home. The reason we decided we would re film this scene is because the area i filmed it in was too small and it didn't tell the audience enough about where it was. So today we decided that using a conference room would work better as it had a better environment and looked more realistic. We got a number of different shots of the scene with George in playing as the investigator trying to solve the crimes.
Some  of the props we used in today's shoot were photos of children that we had got ourselves used them as victims of the crimes and some other pictures to create the investigation board such a map, newspaper article, a suspect photo and copy of fingerprints and footprints. A couple of other things we used in the scene of George sitting at the table were more photos and some other random bits that you would find in an office environment such as pens, pins, paper clips and folders.

Change in our narrative

Changing our Narrative

During the process of making our title sequence we realised that we would need to change our narrative bit because originally we wanted the protagonist to be a father who would be filmed in his home solving the crime however due to us not have time to go and film in someones house we decided that we would just have a detective working in his office. We still-think that it could work having him be the father of the child that has been kid napped however in our new narrative he is already a detective.

Production Log 2

Production Log 2

In todays lesson we went back to the drama room that we filmed in during our first shoot. This time we re filmed some of our shots and added a few new ones. We managed to film our opening shot of harrys feet and then him sitting down at the table where he would open the book which is supposed to represent a new story beginning.   We needed to re shot a few scenes because the lighting wasn't good enough in the original footage or it was too grainy. Although we want our footage to look a little grainy we don't want it to spoil the footage or make it un clear what is going on.

In this shoot we used pretty much the same props as the same one which is
Fake knife
Fake butchers knife
Fake blood
Tracing paper
A sheet of yarn to lay on the table.
